Why?

The developments of recent years invariably indicate that Dutch students from non-Western backgrounds, less concerned with their ethnic background, but increasingly cling to their religious identity.

At the same time, the presence of Muslim students at colleges and universities has grown exponentially in recent decades. These factors add up, creating the growing need for Islamic student associations, in which academic development and social involvement are combined with religious development.

Gradually, the first student associations appeared on an Islamic basis in the academic landscape and three years ago even created an umbrella organization capable of representing the interests of Muslim students at national level.

However, the University of Amsterdam was left lonely behind on this development, so on 18 January 2020 a number of Muslim students decided to take matters into their own hands by calling on other students and to gauge the support for a student association on an Islamic basis. It turned out to be successful.

Dozens of students joined in, creating the first meetings and meetings. After a board was installed shortly later, Muslim University Students of Amsterdam was established by notarial deed on 11 March 2020.

Mission and Vision

Creating an inclusive academic environment in which all (Muslim) students feel at home, while strengthening their religious identity and developing academically.

representing (Muslim) students at the University of Amsterdam;

representing the interests of (Muslim) students at the University of Amsterdam;

encouraging the participation and binding of (Muslim) students at the University of Amsterdam;

promoting the social, academic and religious development of (Muslim) students;

normalizing the image of Islam in academia;

strengthening the knowledge position with regard to the Islamic faith;

ensuring greater connection and cohesion between Muslim students and non-Muslim students;

organising activities such as workshops, lectures, training sessions, discussion evenings, conferences, sports activities, excursions and charitable activities;

promoting the work orientation of (Muslim) students at the University of Amsterdam by, among other things, visiting potential employers, inviting guest speakers from the labour market and organising the aforementioned activities;

promoting the participation of international (Muslim) students at the University of Amsterdam.

About us

Basis and Values

Muslim University Students of Amsterdam is an Islamic and therefore not cultural or ethnic, but religious, student association. The Islamic identity of the association results from the fact that the association is accessible and transparent in character and that ethnic diversity is sought within the association.

The association is one of the core values of internal democracy with the aim of keeping the student union sound in the administrative sense and achieving the full membership participation in order to be able to take a broad-based course.

وَالَّذينَ استَجابوا لِرَبِّهِم وَأَقامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَأَمرُهُم شورىٰ بَينَهُم وَمِمّا رَزَقناهُم يُنفِقونَ

“And for those who listen to their Lord and keep their prayers, and whose way of doing things is a matter of mutual agreement and for those who give what We have provided them with.” (As-Shura 42:38 Qur’an)

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

“O humanity, We have created you from a man and a woman, and We have made you nations and tribes so that you may know each other.” (Al-Hujuraat 49:13 Qur’an)

The foundation of the association embodies the academic values for which the association stands as well as the compatibility of Islam and science. The association regards Islam as an enrichment for the academy and the Qur’an and the Sunnah as an eternal driver and infinite source of inspiration for academic and social development.

Gaining knowledge is a high religious duty, as surrendered by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) “Gathering knowledge is a duty for every Muslim.” (Moeslim).

يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ

“… Allah will elevate those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge in rank. And Allah is Omniscient, Wise.” (Al- Mujadilah 58:11)

This makes the association the ideal meeting place to build a network, by bringing highly educated (Muslim) students together and exchanging their ideas with each other, learning from each other and using each other’s expertise in order to achieve academic, religious and personal development together.

However, our association is not only accessible to or aimed at Muslim students, but also stands up for the interests of students in general, regardless of religion. Membership is therefore not subject to discriminatory conditions and visiting our events is open to all.
